About Frederick Douglass
Frederick Douglass was born enslaved in 1818, escaped bondage in 1838 and became one of the most notable men in history.
Douglass escaped north to freedom on the underground railroad eventually landing in New Bedford, where he and his wife, a free woman, Anna Murray began their life together.
He quickly rose to prominence as an abolitionist and anti-slavery speaker, traveling the country and the world to shed light on the horrors of slavery. His personal experience gave a human face to the sufferings of the enslaved and formed a forceful attack on slavery in the South and racial prejudice in the North.

Frederick Douglass is remembered as a noted orator, writer, publisher, politician, entrepreneur, activist, celebrity, and historical figure. He left an indelible mark on the social, economic, and political landscape of the United States and the world.
