Notice for 8th Grade Families

October 26, 2022

Dear 8th Grade Families and Scholars,

As you may know next week we will begin Quarter 2 of our academic year for all classes and will soon be meeting to discuss scholar performance in the first Quarter and make some action plans to help support scholars in Quarter 2.

We are reaching out to the community today to inform you about the works of literature that we will be covering specifically in 8th grade during Quarter 2. As previously mentioned by Dr. Theresa Mercier, Quarter 2 will heavily focus on stories that include topics such as Anti-Semitism and the Holocaust. We want families to be aware that the following subjects will include many instances or references of death and genocide and may be upsetting to some readers.

We also want our families to understand that as a community we must ensure that our scholars are conducting themselves appropriately when engaging in this text and not making any anti-semetic remarks or comments about anything they may be reading or toward one another. Below are the texts the scholars will be reading in Quarter 2. Both works are accounts of experiences of Holocaust survivors who are sharing their stories and experiences with the world.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning Maus tells the story of Vladek Spiegelman, a Jewish survivor of Hitler’s Europe, and his son, a cartoonist coming to terms with his father’s story.
Born in the town of Sighet, Transylvania, Elie Wiesel was a teenager when he and his family were taken from their home in 1944 to Auschwitz concentration camp, and then to Buchenwald.
