Kristin Furtado is a Physical Education Teacher at Alma’s Frederick Douglass Campus.
What made you decide to join the Crew at Alma?
I really love the team atmosphere and working together as a group. It was a very welcoming place and I love the concept holding students to high expectations to prove they can do anything if they put the work in.
What do you hope to contribute to Alma?
I hope I can contribute a fun and safe environment for students, where they can be themselves and feel comfortable talking and coming to me if they need. I want to students to enjoy moving and being physically active, even if physical education isn’t their strong place. I would love to contribute some athletic options after school and help coach as well.
What teacher made a difference in your life, and how?
I would have to say my 4th grade teacher Mrs. Cahill. She was very patient and really took the time to help students (like me) who needed the extra time to learn a new skill and process all the information. Academics has never been my strong suit but she never made me feel like I was behind everyone else or that I lacked the skills the learn. I just did things slightly different and that was ok. My strong suit wasn’t in the classroom, but she never made feel like I couldn’t do it. She still pushed and held me to the same expectations as everyone else but allowed me to figure things out on my own and figure out a way that worked best for me.
Why did you become involved in education?
I knew I wanted to do something with children and I was a very active student. I knew I wanted to do something that I could combine my love for children and athletics and Physical Education did that. I want to students to know that they have an adult on their side and a safe adult in their lives outside of their family and friends. That everyone has different strengths but we are all part of a team and we can help each other to be our best.
Where did you go to college or post-secondary school?
Rhode Island College
What did you like about your college?
It was small. They have an excellent education program, and once you were in the program you moved through with the same classmates, which was great. You really got to know each other you became a family and were able to really help each other out in the process.
