Meet Mrs. Calvano

Sonya Calvano is a K-5 Academic Interventionist at Alma’s Frederick Douglass Campus.

What made you decide to join the Crew at Alma?
The Crew Code at Alma aligns with my beliefs as an educator.

What do you hope to contribute to Alma?
My dedication and perseverance to every scholar so that they will have a lifelong love for reading.

What teacher made a difference in your life, and how?
My English Language Arts Teacher in Elementary School, because he inspired me to read by being patient and enthusiastic.

Why did you become involved in education?
My passion for teaching began when I had my own children whom struggled with learning to read so I used multi sensory techniques and orthographic mapping that developed their literacy.

Where did you go to college or post-secondary school?
Lesley University

What did you like about your college?
Lesley University engaged my learning and was devoted to academic excellence.

What is your favorite food?
Seafood (especially shrimp!)

What is your favorite book?
Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult
