What made you decide to join the Crew at Alma?
I am a charter school educator, and I was raised in New Bedford and looking to give back to my community of young learners. I am a “veteran” teacher and looking for her forever home in a school setting.
What do you hope to contribute to Alma?
I will bring my vibrant personality and high energy to Alma. I have many years of STEM experience, I am looking to bring my knowledge as I learn from Alma to take my experience to the next level as I learn from my peers and superiors.
What teacher made a difference in your life, and how?
Mrs. C Murphy, she was a teacher during my high school years. I was part of the child development program. We were cohort of students who wanted to pursue education in some fashion. She became my mentor, and later on in life became a dear friend, whom today I call a second mom. She was patient, and had all the right answers, at least it seemed to be. We continue our bond today, through social media, yearly visits and daily messages.
Why did you become involved in education?
From grade 8 I fell in love with science, all because of the teacher I had. I pursuit my love for education into high school and was accepted into the child development program, where I was able to work in the field as a child care worker. After high school I was able to attend a junior college (Fisher Junior College) and then transfer to UMASS Dartmouth. During my journey I was lucky enough to work in the Dartmouth public system. Being able to explain how things “work”, being a hands on type of person, science allowed me to find my “spot” in education.
Where did you go to college or post-secondary school?
UMASS Dartmouth BA, and UMASS Dartmouth- Graduate school is 75% complete- working on a masters in education with a minor in general science.
What did you like about your college?
I chose UMASS Dartmouth for their education program. ( I went to college later in life and was a commuter) I enjoyed group work with other students who wanted to become educators.
