Alma Families,
We hope you are all enjoying your summer while remaining safe and well. We have some important updates to our school year calendar and hours of operation to share with you.
As some of you are aware, Alma operated on reduced hours last school year due to the pandemic. Alma will now operate on an 8:30 am – 3:30 pm schedule for all of our sites, Monday through Friday, for the upcoming school year. This change was made after thoughtful consideration and based on input from all of you as well as our staff.
Due to these new hours, Alma will offer a free afterschool program for scholars in grades K-8 from 3:30-4:45 pm on Monday through Thursday. More details will follow in the coming weeks.
Please see below for an updated calendar for the 2021-2022 school year. We have included staff professional development days as well as special events such as family conferences. The first day of school remains Thursday, August 26th. Please note that the first two days of school (Aug. 26 and Aug. 27) will be half days for Alma scholars to allow for professional development for staff. All half days marked in the calendar this year will also have a 12:30 pm dismissal.
Last week, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) released new COVID-19 guidance for the 2021-2022 school year. As always, our top priority is the health and safety of all community members. DESE’s guidance still allows districts to make individual decisions about what is best for their students and staff, and we continue to commit to doing so.
At Alma, we are closely reviewing the research, especially about the new COVID Delta variant, and our team will, in consultation with health officials and our community, decide whether to implement stricter COVID-19 precautions when we return in the fall than those currently in the DESE guidance. It is also worth noting that it is three weeks before school begins, and we are likely to receive new information from state and federal authorities before then.
