Alma del Mar encourages families to check out some of the great summer programs in and around New Bedford.  We’ll be adding information to this page throughout May and June.  Please contact us if you know of other opportunities.

Community Boating Center Summer Youth Program

SEA SQUIRTS – (Ages 5-6) Sea Squirts is the ideal course for students ages 5-6. Classes run in the morning from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Students will learn using the US Sailing Certification System. Designed as an introductory, “hands on” class, the focus is on making kids comfortable in and around boats. Swimming, games, and other activities are intermingled with beginner sailing with the goal of FUN! Limit of eight students per session. Bussing is not available for this class.

BEGINNER – (Ages 7-18) Beginner classes are for students who have little or no experience, and who want to become comfortable on the water. Instructors accompany students in the boat, teaching the basics of on the water safety while promoting self-confidence in a fun, enthusiastic and nurturing environment. We offer eight one-week full-day sessions, with eight students per session maximum. This class is taught using a variety of boats including Capris, Sonars and Picos (ages 7-13) and Capris and Sonars (ages 14-18).

No experience necessary.

Full and partial scholarships available (apply now!).  Bus transportation provided.

Kennedy Summer Day Program

This summer program is an opportunity for children to engage in a variety of sports, games, crafts, and outdoor fun while making new friends. Activities include beach and swim time, special visitor programs from the National Park Service, bike safety instruction, and presentations by the Massachusetts Department of Recreation.

The Kennedy Summer Day Program operates out of Fort Taber Park and includes breakfast, lunch and transportation. The program is open to children who are eligible for kindergarten through the age of fourteen. For New Bedford residents, each session is $120.

Financial aid is available.  Bus transportation provided.

Camp Frederick Douglass at the YMCA

Ages 5-14.  “The small, fun, nurturing environment of Camp Frederick Douglass allows each camper an opportunity to build self esteem and trusting relationships. Through programming that enriches the spirit, mind and body, the staff of Camp Douglass helps each child learn to develop their physical and social skills. The friendships that campers make here will last a lifetime. Camp Douglass offers unique programming in that campers ages 9-12 have the opportunity to choose a different specialty camp, week to week, during sessions F-I. This is a great chance for campers to explore and learn more about a specific game or skill.”

Boys & Girls Club Summer Fun

The New Bedford Boys & Girls Club will once again host its annual Summer Fun program for boys & girls ages 7 to 13 years.  This program is aimed at providing physical, recreational and educational activities in a safe, wholesome environment.  Concentrations include basketball, baseball, trips, soccer, art, healthy habits, billiard games, and dance.

ArtWorks! Summer Programs

Ages 6-18. ArtWorks! Cool Art Kids summer program classes are designed to allow youth to meet and work with artists and to experience art practice as a part of everyday life. Classes offer opportunities to work with a variety of media each day. Offerings this summer include acting for film and TV, sculpture, painting, mosaics, weaving, eco-design, and Create a Space.

Computer Camp at Greater New Bedford Vocational High School

Students entering grades 3-8.  Computer Camp is a project-based program where youth get hands-on training in various topics using the state-of-the-art equipment at New Bedford Vocational High School.  Each student works on his/her own computer.  8:00 AM – 12:00 PM; one week sessions during July.  $100.

 Art Camp at Greater New Bedford Vocational High School 

Students entering grades 3-7.  Summer art camp features painting, drawing, clay, set-design, and green screen video.  8:00 AM – 12:00 PM; one week sessions in July; $100.

Lloyd Center for Children: Young Naturalist Programs

Environmental activities for children entering grades K-2.  Topics include fish, wings, and crabby crustaceans.

Lloyd Center Summer Programs in Coastal Studies

One week sessions (9:00 AM – 3:30 PM) for children entering grades 3-8.  Topics include fresh water wetlands and earth, wind, and power.

New Bedford Ballet

A six-week summer program is offered in July and August. Dancers are urged to develop their choreographic, dance and stage skills by taking performance workshops during the summer program.

Trips for Kids, New Bedford

Ages 10-16.  Bicycle all around the south end peninsula, stopping to visit and explore many exciting sites including Fort Taber and Palmer’s Island. Swim, learn snorkeling, play tennis and basketball and have fantastic experiences visiting regional working farms as special guests of local farm families.
