Class of 2028 Conducts Fieldwork at Zoo

Alma’s kindergarteners visited the Buttonwood Park Zoo as part of their study of spotted salamanders. As part of their spring Expedition, the scholars have been learning all about the habitat, prey, and life cycle of the spotted salamander.

At the zoo, they observed spotted salamanders and asked questions such as the following:

  • “Can spotted salamanders only lay their eggs in the water?”
  • “When salamanders enter vernal pools, do they stay on top or sink to the bottom?”
  • “Why don’t the mother stay with their eggs?”
  • “How long does it take for the salamander’s tail to regrow if it is eaten?”
Scholars had the opportunity to practice their interviewing and note-taking skills as well as to take photos of a spotted salamander.
